Tips on How to Install a Programmable Thermostat

One of the tips you hear about most when it comes to lowering your electric bill is to purchase a programmable thermostat. Doing so will allow you to better control the temperature of your home especially during the most extreme months of summer and winter.

Let’s go over a typical summer-time scenario when it comes to using older model manual thermostats. As the day moves on, you have to physically get up and lower the temperature. But for most of us, we simply employ a “set it and forget it” technique. We set the thermostat to one setting and let it run all day.

But eventually we get the electric bill and after running the thermostat at 72 degrees for an entire month, the results aren’t pretty. So then it might become necessary to come up with a manual strategy to get your electric bill under control.

But the truth is, how long can we physically and manually change the thermostat on a daily basis before going back to our old ways? That very question alone is the reason why it would be a sound financial investment to purchase a programmable thermostat.

Overcome Your Fears

For most people, the one fear when it comes to purchasing a programmable thermostat, is installing it. Let’s face it. The last thing you want to do is try to replace your old thermostat and “break” your air conditioning unit. That is a bit of an overstatement but we understand your fears. So we have put together some tips on how to install your new programmable thermostat — and eliminate your fears altogether.

YouTube Videos

YouTube isn’t just for watching funny cat videos or learning how to make a key lime pie. There are 100s of 1000s of how-to videos from people just like you. And when it comes to installing thermostats, there are tons of helpful step-by-step videos.

Simply to go and enter a search term which includes the model you purchased (or are considering) along with the word ‘install’ or ‘installation’. You may also want to include the number of wires on your old thermostat. Ex: ‘install NEST 3rd Gen thermostat with 2 wires’.

Manufacturer Videos

If you buy a new thermostat from a reputable manufacturer, they will usually have expert installation videos on their website, just like ones you can find on YouTube. This may be a better choice than YouTube because the instructions will be specifically tailored for your model and will also cover all options pertaining to the type of wiring system you currently have installed.

Buy on Amazon and Get Expert Installation

If you purchase your new programmable thermostat on Amazon, on many models there will be an option to purchase expert installation. In most cases, once you finish the equipment purchase, Amazon will put you in contact with a local contractor who will install the device. The advantage of using an expert installer is that they are usually in and out within an hour.

Angie’s List

You’ve seen the commercials. You’ve heard about the service. But when it comes to Angie’s List, most of us think about services such as yard maintenance, home cleaning or refrigerator repair.

But Angie’s List does offer thermostat installation services. Simply to go and do a search for ‘thermostat installation’ in your zip code.

Takl is a new app where you can find various local contractors to do all types of home services, including thermostat installation. You can download the app on Google Play and the Apple App Store.

Other Various Local Contractors

The final option would be to simply Google ‘programmable thermostat installation’. You will be given a list of local contractors in your area who can come out and do the job. In many cases, this may be the cheapest option since you are dealing directly with the contractor as opposed to going through a service such as Angie’s List or using Amazon’s expert installation service.

The time for making excuses is over. It’s time to start saving money on your electric bill by programmatically controlling your thermostat. And once you start using it, you will wonder why you didn’t buy one sooner.
